GeoNiche, the best caching program, and not just for PalmOS!
I've been waiting for Palm to get moving towards the more powerful solutions and capabilities that other devices have had for a few years, and even though I'd told myself for quite a long time I'd never go this route, I took opportunity to get an AT&T Tilt for a good price and have been using it as my primary device about two weeks now. The first week I owned it I used it on WiFi only while messing around with it, second week I swapped the sim back and forth a bit, since I've used it as my primary device.
However, I have continued to use GeoNiche on the Treo 680. I've tried everything on the Windows Mobile device.. BeeLineGPS works out the best for me, but it's just clumbsy and doesn't handle a lot of things well, plus its navigation to a cache is just wonky, sometimes it times out and goes back to the list, it's very difficult to pick a specific cache on its radar screen, require a lot of tap-and-hold operations, tiny icons, etc.. All pretty typical Windows Mobile interface mis-designs, I digress.. None the less, it was the best I could find.
PathAway is really nice, but for me, it's not a caching program. Smache, GeoScout, GPSTuner, GPXSonar, CacheMate, all not horrible, but none even come close to GeoNiche's simplicity, usability, and downright power when it comes to caching.
So I finally decided to try StyleTap with GeoNiche and it works great!! I'll try to describe my configuration a bit, even though I'm still working out which hard keys are available and what I want to map them to, etc, but the general set up works.
Basic configuration:
- Install StyleTap
- Tap the Menu icon, Options menu item, then User Name item. Set it to your Palm Hotsync ID.
- Install GeoNiche into Styletap (via PC program, or you can also "Open" in Explorer and it should import into StyleTap)
- Launch GeoNiche. (YAY!!)
- Tap Menu icon, go to Targets, create any new Target
- Menu, Target, Share, save your target. (this will set up the palm/programs/geoniche/share and storage directories on your memory card, or perhaps whereever you installed StyleTap)
- Copy GeoNiche pdb files to your new palm/programs/geoniche/storage directory
- Import as usual!
Port Configuration
- Download SerialUtilily from StyleTap website
- Install SerialUtility into StyleTap and launch it to configure CradleRS232Port or RFComm to your GPS
- Match your GPS com ports up with RS232 or RFcomm listed in the SerialUtility program
- Select RS323 or RFcomm in GeoNiche
- Turn on the GPS and then tap the GPS icon in GeoNiche. Sometimes I've had it fail the first attempt but never failed twice on me, maybe just times out sometimes.
FYI.. These are the two I found that mapped into what's available in GeoNiche. IRComm was also available. I think any baud is fine, 4800, 38400, etc. One caveat; my Tilt built-in GPS I have assigned to CradleRS232Port and I find it only updates in GeoNiche every 7-8s where it then spews a bunch of data in, like it's hung-up. I couldn't figure out a way to make this work well. HOWEVER, my good ole Holux 236 (RFComm port mapped to com9 and associated in Windows Mobile with a serial connection there) works perfectly.
I have a workflow kind of like this: Set up PQ which is sent to computer. Computer runs it through EasyNiche which outputs a PDB, PDB is put into a rar. I download this rar, put the files in the GeoNiche storage directory, and update GeoNiche like I always did on the Treo. In the end, basically same thing I always did on the Treo.
Caveats:
- Unknown battery usage (Will measure soon)
- Display not as nice (my device is QVGA, I bet it looks fine in VGA)
- Fonts etc are blocky from interpolation from 160->240 res. This can be disabled but makes visible display rather small
- Less hard buttons available to use. <--- Edit: Wrong! Total of 8 hard buttons on my AT&T Tilt
- Quirky internal GPS (but fine with Bluetooth GPS).
- StyleTap price. Ouch. :(
Hope this is useful to some folks in case they have WM devices or have considered it. And thanks to RayDar for writing such a well-written program!
GeoNiche on Windows
Wow. Thanks for going to all the trouble.
I occasionally get requests for a Windows Mobile version of GeoNiche and I have seen comments like "I just wish it were available for Windows" on other forums. Perhaps the fruits of your labor will be useful for those interested in getting the best Geocaching software on their Windows device.

I hope so!I hope it
I hope so!
I hope it generates more sales for you to continue development, and I hope it might also help those folks who have had to move to Windows Mobile or might be in the future having to do so to keep GeoNiche in their caching toolbox.
I spent about 30m last night syncing up settings between the two, and it turns out I actually have an extra button to use in GeoNiche. :D
My device is the AT&T Tilt, and its button layout is like this:
Hopefully that turns out looking readable... Anywho..
I can assign GeoNiche buttons to the following (ordered by the button number in GeoNiche)
1: Explorer
2: Calendar
3: Windows
Plus of course U/D/L/R on the DPad as well as the middle button.
I have it set up like this, in case anyone is curous:
1: Cache Note
2: Cache Details
3: GPS Toggle
Up/Down: Zoom In/Out
Left: Mode Previous
Right: Mode Next
DPad button: Labels Toggle
And I have GPS Toggle, Record, GPS Lock, and Mode Next as soft keys on the screen.
